Café con Leche: A Family Tradition, One Cup at a Time.

I didn’t move to the United States until I was in my 20s. Before that, my days were anchored by two special moments, both revolving around coffee.

September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the cultures, traditions, and stories that shape our communities. For me, one of those stories begins with café con leche, a simple family ritual that brought us together through ordinary mornings, long conversations, and shared moments.

A Family Tradition, One Cup at a Time

In the morning, we’d all gather to prepare our coffee, the rich aroma filling the kitchen. We’d pair it with fresh pan dulce or something similar, and the hours would just melt away as we laughed and chatted. It was a perfect, slow start to the day.

Then, after la hora de la comida—after lunch—we would all sit together again for another round. It was a second chance to catch up on life, share stories, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Those coffee breaks weren’t just about the drink; they were about connection, comfort, and love.
